Founded in 1884, the prestigious social and cricket club restricted its membership to the expatriate community. Originally based in an attap-roofed ‘plank’ building, the club was replaced in 1890 by a two-storey timber structure designed by AC Norman. In 1910, the club was rebuilt to resemble a mock Tudor house. The Royal Selangor Club was known as ‘The Spotted Dog’ in the colonial days. As one version of the story goes, the Police Commissioner’s wife would leave her Dalmatians at the entrance when visiting the club.
