The first thing that hit us was the lap cheong – the smoked and sweetened dried sausage with alternating layers of fat and lean bits, which you’ll find in a good lo mai kai. Tak Foo is replete with other Chinese dried goods as well – conpoy (scallop), ho see (oyster), black moss, fungus, fish maw and preserved meat. It’s no wonder that customers throng this well-stocked shop during Chinese New Year. Previously located at Central Market, Tak Foo has moved to Jalan Tun HS Lee and opened up a few more outlets around the area. According to the owner, even customers from as far as Cheras come to stock up their supplies. Evidently, only a quality shop with 41 years of history like Tak Foo can stand the test of time. 146 Jalan Tun HS Lee (03 2032 2589).
