Because we don’t see the face of the subject, the viewer has to piece together the details of the scene to get some understanding of the subject. The empty beer can at the bottom suggests that he is in a state of alcoholic depression, or simply too drunk to lift his head to engage with the camera. Despite the obvious composition and staging of this image, the feeling of oblivion and excess or perhaps isolation and loneliness references emotions that everyone experiences at some stage in their life.
