The feelings of pride and celebration by this young football team give this portrait a sense of power. The child as photographic subject, especially from Third World countries, often becomes an exploited poignant subject of survival, poverty and suffering. The humanity of these children is then stripped away to become symbols of socio-political issues. The success of this image is that the individuality of each child is clear, as is their confidence and desire to be good at their sport. Some wear shoes, others do not, some footballs are almost unusable, others are passable. However the viewer is encouraged to feel that this lack does not inhibit the enjoyment of sport or youthful camaraderie.
Deadline for KL Photoawards 2012 submission is extended to Apr 4. Click here for more info.
