Still no Federer, Nadal or even the legendarily grumpy Murray but the line-up for this year’s Malaysian Open is not to be sniffed at. Defending champion Nikolay Davydenko is back, along with Robin Soderling (leading the line-up at no. 5 in the rankings), Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer and former Wimbledon champ Lleyton Hewitt. Last year Davydenko walked away with the Malaysian trophy and went on to win the ATP world tour, pipping Federer to the post in the semi-finals and knocking out del Potro in the finals.
The stars will be playing the hard court at Bukit Jalil, for prize money of just under US$1 million (US$947,750 to be exact). The nine-day tournament will see two days of qualifying rounds (Sept 25 & 26), 28 men’s singles and 16 team men’s doubles, and tickets are already selling fast, so be quick with your mouse. Or just queue up early for free entry on the qualifying days Sept 25 & 26, and bring the kids along for free on Sept 27.
And unlike days of yore, watching top drawer tennis is not the only agenda. There’ll be twice daily autograph sessions, and after every Centre Court match autographed tennis balls will be hit into the audience, redeemable against some impressive prizes. There’ll be chances for fans to take part in the on-court coin toss, get invited to dinner in the player’s lounge, and everyone else can content themselves with the daily on-site entertainment, food and music.
At the time of press, all of the 28 players had been confirmed, but keep checking the official (and award-winning) website www.malaysianopentennis.com for updates.
