World Cup Round-up June 22
By Joe Hizul
Portugal 7 vs North Korea 0
It's been quite a busy night. The biggest news is of course in the Group G match of Portugal vs. North Korea, in which the Portuguese trashed the North Korean a whopping seven goals to nil, reigniting their World Cup hope after their dismal opening performances against Ivory Coast last Tuesday.
The next Group G matches are slated for this Friday, and although Portugal’s opponent will be Brazil, they’re already a shoe-in for the next round; unless of course they lost by a very big margin and Ivory Coast beat the North Korean with a BIG kenduri of goals.
Goals: Portugal - Meireles (29), Simao (53), Almeida (56), Tiago (60, 88), Liedson (80), Ronaldo (87)
Chile 1 vs. Switzerland 0
Meanwhile in Group H, Chile secured their place in the next round in a tough gritty fight against Switzerland in which they beat the Swiss one to nil. The Swiss was reduced to 10 men after midfielder Valeron Berahmi was sent off the field after just 30 minutes in the first half. But even with this advantage, the Chileans struggles to break through the Swiss defences. The winning goal was only scored in the 75th minutes by substitute Mark Gonzalez
Goals: Chile – Gonzalez (75)
Spain 2 vs. Honduras 0
Also in Group H, Spain had an easy victory over Honduras, beating them two goals to nil, with both goals scored by striker David Villa. The Hondurans hardly gave a fight and was easily overwhelmed by a charged up Spaniards looking to recovers from their shocked one nil defeat to the Swiss in their opening game on June 16.
Goals: Spain - Villa (17, 51)
Each nations participating in the World Cup has played two group stage matches each, so the next round of matches will prove to be crucial for those teams yet to make the grade to the next round. The matches should give plenty of thrills and exciting moments.
The final rounds of group stage matches starts tonight with the Group A games of Mexico vs. Uruguay and France vs. South Africa, both games starts at 10pm Malaysian time. Groups A are still wide open with all teams having a mathematical chance of advancing through. But thing looks bad for France, with strikes and boycott leaving coach Raymond Domenech’s side fast becoming the butt of jokes. The Bafana Bafana boys on the other hands are also in the same boat as the French, so the match looks even-out from game point perspective.
But the match to look out for will definitely be the Mexico vs. Uruguay one, with both Latin teams going for the win to avoid meeting with Group B leader Argentina in the next round.
The other matches for the night, or should we say tomorrow morning, at 2.30 am Malaysian time, will be the Group B final group stage matches of Nigeria vs. South Korea and Greece vs. Argentina. Argentina currently leads this Group, but as thing stand, everything can happen for all the teams involved
Argentina is almost through to the next round, and at the other end of the table, Nigeria is almost out of the World Cup, but the Nigerian should not be discarded so easily. It’s all or nothing for them. And the South Korean won’t be going down without a fight, so this match should be the most interesting one between the two.
Argentina should go through after two wins, while should Greece forces a draw, they too will advance but needs the Nigerian to beat the South Korean, should this happen, so expect a revived Greece side to take the battle to the Argentinian.
All in all a very interesting matches that should keep us footie awake till the wee hour of the morning. Will it be worth it? Come back tomorrow for the next TOKL World Cup round up.
