Pubs Ahoy!
By Laura Webb
On Saturday October 31 2009, some of KL’s finest pubs set sail as part of the Royal Selangor Yacht Club’s Festival of Sail to mark the end of its 2009 racing season. With fierce winds and ominous seas the race proved that there is far more to our local boozers than a cold pint and fine pub food. When not competing for the best Full English in Malaysia, these pubs took to the waves for a different kind of battle and made a great contribution to the ever growing Malaysian sailing scene.
The aptly named Pub Challenge was won by Jarrod & Rawlins, their boat being skippered by Malaysian Denis Rawlins himself (whose prowess on the seas is well known within the sailing community). The boat was crewed by Jarrod & Rawlins regulars (who conveniently double up as regulars on the racing scene); Anthony Hastings, Fay Khoo and Lee Mun Wai. Denis Rawlins certainly has more than one string to his bow; not only partnering Jarrod Chek in providing one of KL’s best deli/bar/restaurant/pub establishments (which serve up arguably the best fry up in Malaysia), he has also put his hand to building a yacht and sailing one from Port Klang to the Mediterranean.
Sid’s Pubs, Finnegans and The George and the Dragon were the other noble and game participants despite having no sailors in their midst (or on their barstools). Royal Selangor Yacht Club sailors stepped up to the fold to assist the publicans with sailing their boats.
So next time you are nursing your pint or bangers and mash at Sid’s be sure to look on in admiration and for those who consider themselves ship shape, get yourself on board for the likely rematch this year. Similarly, after a few pints of Guinness at Finnegan’s or cider at The George and the Dragon, be wary of letting your enthusiasm run away for you; you might find yourself cutting through the waves at high speed in October.
