Branded adventure gear is nothing new among rugged thrill-seekers and while French label Lafuma’s goods have few novel designs, they’re nevertheless ideally made for sturdy and high endurance use in the outdoors. Lafuma began manufacturing backpacks in 1930, but eventually expanded to produce assorted goods, which have been selling in Malaysian department stores for more than a decade. Although such retail channel still remains, it recently opened its own first local flagship store in Bangsar.

Offering products for trail and hash running activities, hiking, trekking, mountaineering and various lifestyle categories, there are three different products for each of the aforementioned category: ‘un-limit’ designed for hardcore adventurers; ‘silver’ for special premium collection; and ‘essential’ for customers on a budget.

Lafuma has also been involved in sustainable development the last 15 years. This commitment to the environment has resulted in the special range, ‘Pure Leaf Collection’ comprising eco-friendly products made from 100 per cent organic cotton and hemp, or recycle materials like polartec and technowarm micro-fibre.

The brand has also recently launched two new collections in the Light Hiking category and Lafuma Design for Women collection. The store’s co-owner, Ng Hock Soon believes active women will be smitten by the 1.6kg Lafuma Naia 35 backpack (RM489), made from Velocity 420D polymide and designed for female hikers and trekkers.

Although I’m not made to endure such ‘strenuous’ activities, I still think the technical features are important for people more inclined to the outdoors than I. A good example of this comes with the 35-litre capacity, 3D Mesh back carrying system for good ventilation that comes with gel strap and belt inserts. It boasts various compartments and double access to the main compartment with wide travel bag-type front opening and is fitted with leak-tight zip, built-in with removable storage pockets for first-aid kit and wash-bag, and hydration pocket with tube port and rain cover.

Lafuma also sells a limited variety of energy drinks in packs and bottles. If you prefer scenic sights without roughing it, the store will also (slightly incongruously) carry garden furniture this year-end.
