Stand up sit down... Kavin Jayaram
By TOKL
Describe your act to someone who’s never seen you before.
I am definitely far from politically correct; some might even call me edgy. But what I always try to do is to show everyone the funny side of my life and how I see things around me. I do sometimes come across as a whinging git, like the inner voice that you never let out in public.
What makes you laugh?
People who don’t mean to be funny cracks me up. I always laugh at things where people are trying not to laugh but they laugh in spite of themselves, such as socially awkward situations where people are trying so hard not to laugh. Like funerals and weddings, and that sort of thing.
Why do comedy?
As corny as this may sound, I actually do comedy because I love making people laugh (see, I told you it was corny!). It is a passion that I have had and once I stand up on that stage, the adrenaline takes over like a euphoria I crave over and over. That, the fame and chicks of course.
What’s the best thing about being a comic?
I get to have the time of my life on stage every time I perform. As much as I entertain the crowd, I genuinely have a ball of myself. That, the fame and chicks of course.
How often do you get to write new material?
Not as often as I would like.
Where do you see both yourself and the comedy scene progressing in the next few years?
Hopefully, we get to see a change in the comedy scene in Malaysia. I come from a union of comics, the Young Comedians of Malaysia (YCOM) that consists of those who performed at Comedy Thursday. Our main goal is to set up a comedy club in Malaysia and Time Out KL has given us an outlet for that. At the moment, there aren’t many options on venues and performers in Malaysian comedy and YCOM hopefully will change that. That, the fame and chicks of course!!
Why should people come to Time Out Comedy Thursdays?
Well, if you want to laugh, forget your troubles and basically have a good time, drop by, see what Malaysia’s young comedians have to offer.
Which are your favourite other comics in KL? Anyone we should look out for?
Harith, Jit and Indy & Allan have always been the stalwarts of the Malaysian stand-up comedy scene. Other faces such as Douglas Lim, Joanne Kam etc. have also entertained crowds with their brand of comedy. But I would say, look out for some of the members of YCOM, the wit and humour will surprise many.
What’s the best joke you’ve ever heard?
True story: I was driving to a show once, and was not sure of the way. There was a sign board on the road but it was right at the intersection and blocked by some trees…it did cause a moment of hesitation which almost caused an accident.
My girlfriend remarked: “Why do they put these signboards like that? It's so hard to see… what if someone was blind?
I laughed for an hour and slept on the couch that night…
stand up comedy
just cant get enough
