Space, the final frontier… okay, lame joke, but the ‘Space’ club really does have a sci-fi-looking interior. The latest addition to party-crazy Asian Heritage Row, the club will certainly appeal to many once they get over some of the kitschy tackiness.
When checking it out, the entrance looks tasteful enough but once inside, it’s a whole other “world”. Against industrial cement walls, ceiling and floor are velvet and leather sofas and tables — common enough, but strips of LED lightings in various neon colours accentuate and jazz-up many sections of the interior further brightened up overall by gauzy blue lighting. The lounge area nearest to the entrance even has iron grills where you can peep at people having a good time, or play a peek-a-boo game with your friends lounging on the sofas or bottoming-up with copious amounts of alcohol.
The waitresses dress in tight-fitting lycra jumpsuits in neon yellow that complement (if that’s the right word) the overall lighting effects. So much so, I felt I was in ‘Star Trek’ during my recent visit. Only thing was that I was surrounded by real mortals, the beautiful crowd and sexy waitresses. No strange-looking people with big ears and extra-terrestrial powers.
A place more suited for drinking, you can also hit the dance floor when the mood and music take you. There are resident djs galore. Every Wednesday (Cover RM50 for men; ladies free entry), ‘Marco’ works up an appetite for soulful and classic house music if you’re in the mood for retro anthems. On Thursdays, ‘Bobby’ combines groovy and tribal house music — hard sounds more suited for guys. Which explains why gents enter for free, and ladies pay RM40 cover charge. A welcome and rare change for the KL clubbing scene.
Continuing the ‘boys on top’ theme, Friday’s headliners ‘Gregoire’ and ‘Glynn Tandy’ fill the space with minimal techno (and you thought the genre was dead) and progressive house. Both genres are also offered on Saturdays (Both nights RM50 men, RM35 ladies) from ‘Tandy’ alone on the consoles. Space for a small one?
