At the risk of giving away my age, I have to admit that I am a sucker for retro hits, specifically those from the 80s. Sure the big hair and neon skin-tight leotards were somewhat of a turn off but there is no denying that some of the best music and iconic artists were born in the hey day of the 80s. Those of you reading this would appreciate what I am getting at (don’t deny it), even more so this August as UK duo, the Queens of Noize performs at the Zeta Bar this Aug 13 and 14.
Made up of the super hot sassy DJ duo sensation of Mairead Nash and Tabitha Denholm, both former hosts of ‘MTV UK’s NME Chart Show’, the Queens of Noize have been wreaking deck-wrecking vengeance on an unsuspecting public since 2002. Champions of the never-mind-the-gaps school of DJing, their uniquely chaotic delivery and eye-catching pants have assured their regal status amongst the current school of Rock & Roll DJs. The girls who have vouched that ‘they don’t play beats’, and that their slots will be ‘the best dance workout you will have this year’, is expected to take partygoers back to the good old 80’s where classic hits like ‘Footloose’, ‘Like A Virgin’ and ‘Locomotion’ ruled the airwaves. And for some of us, that’s a pretty good thing….
So you girls spin 80s retro hits. How did that start?
We play all sorts of stuff depending on the occasion from rave anthems to Tina Turner - we like anything that makes us want to throw our selves around. That’s how we started just dancing around together and thought maybe we should do it in public.
Most DJs tend to go with house and R&B, why did you go the 80s way?
Actually, we play all kinds of music and do not limit ourselves to only spinning 80's stuff. But we certainly embrace the 80s because pop then had a fantastic sense of fun and amateurism that it has lost its way a bit now.
What's the ultimate retro pop hit?
Cyndi Lauper – ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ - it says it all really!
Who was the ultimate 80s pop icon for you girls?
Clare Grogan, who was the singer in Altered Images, is our ultimate 80s icon. She came from a Punk background being a fan of Sioxsie and the banshees (their bassist Steve Severin actually produced a number of their tracks) - but embraced pop in a way that totally came from them. All my favourite pop music actually comes from the band themselves. She was naive and funny, exuberant and danced bare foot with great dresses and she was Scottish.
What's the best thing about the 80s?
We're a big fan of the early 80; 1981 is our favourite year - after punk everything was thrown wide open - musically anything was possible and pop was fantastic – plus Madonna was amazing right through the 80s - she seemed so exotic and exciting.
What's the worse?
Duran Duran.
You spun all over the world. Which party was the absolute wildest?
We closed Rosskilde festival - the Danes like to celebrate the end of their festival by burning tents and general rampaging - we led 5,000 in a round of mass aerobics at four in the morning.
The clubs you spun at, do the crowd get in on the act and show up in tacky 80s outfits?
Well we definitely encourage all sorts of dressing up - we do a lot of themed parties in London and love it when people make an effort.
What sort of set will you plan for the Zeta Bar crowd?
We'll have to feel it out because obviously it’s new to us but it’s definitely going to be fun.
And will you expect them to dress their 80s best for you?
That would be great!...as long as they've got their dancing shoes on we'll be happy.
