Five minutes with... Young 6ixx
By Brian Kwan
Young 6ixx is a musician who’s electrifying the West Coast rap scene with his stylings. As such he’ll be in KL as part of Hennessey Artistry, promising to deliver some serious kicks to the hip hop fan base. He took time off the tour to tell it like it is.
You've certainly had an interesting life. Of your personal history – army, LA, Texas etc – what do you think had the most significant impact?
Well the army most definitely. In a few words it was like the Hennessey Artistry tour; it introduced me to many cultures and new things in life.
Were you rapping when you were in the army?
I rapped but I didn't take it serious, I did it to pass time, I mostly just wrote through the hard times and tried to express my feelings as a way of relief.
Who've been your enduring influences?
Jay-Z and Eminem; two great artists with two different stories that I can relate too in many different ways.
Who've been the ones you wince at a bit?
I think you mean which ones do I choose not to listen or don't like. I wouldn't wince at any of them but I really like music that has a little something to say that can describe a moment of an every day person or express relief… and good party music that's not always so simple. So I'm not so much a fan of the snap music sorta say.
Are you working with electronic artists or sticking to a straight street sound?
I'm willing and looking to work with any artist who likes my sound, I don't believe there is nothing you can't do through music… so rock, pop, electronic, jazz, if I can feel the music I'm with it.
