Six-time Grammy-winning saxophonist David Sanborn and his band’s dazzling show in March was just a sign of jazzy things to come for the city as a slew of the world’s leading jazz artistes are joined by local and regional musicians at this month’s maiden two-day KL International Jazz Festival. Saturday’s exciting line up features Meg Okura & the Pan Asian Chamber Jazz Ensemble, Carl Allen Quartet, two-time Grammy winner Ernie Watts, Jeremy Monteiro, who is dubbed Singapore’s ‘King of Swing’, and Incognito, the band that was at the forefront of the British acid jazz movement in the ’80s.

Hiromi Uehara (pictured), the Japanese pianist renowned for her energetic live displays and virtuoso keyboard work, headlines Sunday’s programme, which also features National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters award winning American pianist Ahmad Jamal and the KL Jazz Project. Uehara, who first caught the eye with her acclaimed debut album ‘Another Mind’ in 2003, is widely regarded as one of the leading lights in the jazz community and will perform alongside six-string electric bass pioneer Anthony Jackson and drummer Steve Smith of Journey fame as part of her Trio Project.
