Who we found.... Lovesick Avenue

By Brian Kwan

Did you name your band based on a street name?
Nope. Lovesick Avenue got its name from a sitcom comedy ‘My Wife and Kids’.

So who is Lovesick Avenue?
Khairi on guitar rhythm and backup vocal, Afiqah on lead vocal, Akram on lead guitar, Aizat on drums and percussion, Khairulfatin on keyboards and synth, and Adzlan on bass.

How did Lovesick Avenue come together?
Well, that time was the peak of emo rock. Everyone was listening to it, including us. On one fine teh tarik session, Khairi and Akram decided to play pop punk cover songs with some friends. We tried composing our own materials and suddenly it became more serious. Recruitment of band mates with different music backgrounds really did change the band. From pop punk to rock ’n’ roll, new wave metal to indie rock. That’s how Lovesick Avenue was born.

Are any of your songs based on a lovesick situation?
Yes. All of them are.

Do any of the band members have day jobs?
Certainly. Most of us work as a civil engineer and consultant in the construction field while some of us are still studying for our degrees.

Is it difficult to work full time and play in a band?
Both. Sometimes it could be very difficult and sometimes easy. Where there's will there's a way. Commitment plays an important role. Most of the time we manage to get through.

When does the band rehearse or practice since all of you have either a day job or are still studying?

Weekends, of course. Saturday nights or Friday nights would be great for us. Do come down to Lab Rat Studio, Section 13, Shah Alam to criticise our music or just hang out and have fun. We don’t mind, neither does the owner.

What is it like to be in a Malaysian indie band?
There's no big money in it. But our passion for music keeps us going. We call it a challenge. There are a lot of indie bands in Malaysia and being number one is a very long way for us.

Has there been support for your music?
100 per cent DIY. We make our own music, play our own music. We do have some help from various indie record labels and organisation in publicity of the band.

If someone is watching your band for the first time, which song would you suggest is a must hear?
‘Euphony’ – it's our love theme song.

If you were given the chance to collaborate with anyone, who would be on top of your list?
There's so many great artists in our local scene: Myo from Oh Chentaku, Bandu from Funky Doryz, and Malique from Too Phat would be on top of the list.

Lovesick Avenue has one album released, any news on the next one?
We don’t consider it an album but it’s an EP. We are planning to produce an album but not at the moment. We're still experimenting on new sounds, producing new materials and combining genres.
