Three questions… Jzelynn

JzelynnWhat got you into singing?
Well, my interest in singing started since I was young and I must say this deep passion within me had always been there. It all started from a Yamaha singing competition which I took part in when I was 13, urged on by 2 of my school mates. I didn't think much of it then but somehow I managed a 2nd. runner-up spot. With that encouraging result, I thought maybe I may just have some form of talent in singing, so I decided to take part in more and more singing competitions and somehow managed better and better results.

You’ve been performing since 1996 and left the music scene for a while. What made you decide to come back now?
Actually, my journey in singing started in 1994 and I was quite active in the scene till 1998. From 1999 onwards, I had to focus on my education as well as work when I came back from the U.S. in 2002. Yet I was still participating in the singing scene, no doubt at much lesser pace when I came back. There are a few main reasons I decided to come back into the music scene. One of it is the constant encouragement from the people around me and secondly, I had always wanted to explore how far I can go in this journey and I am really blessed that things have panned out amazingly right up to the recent launch of my album Percaya!

So why a digital album as your debut album?
The world is currently facing an environmental degradation, whether we realise it or not. I feel each and everyone of us should do our parts, may it be big or small, in promoting environmental awareness as well as contributing positively in healing the Earth. Through a digital album, we are thus using less plastic in the process of producing a music album right to its final product. I am just merely doing my little part in this positive environmental drive.

More importantly, a tri-lingual album?
Oh and why not? We live in Malaysia, a country which is multiracial, multicultural and multi-lingual. So why not a multi-lingual album, specifically tri-lingual in my case? Malaysians all live harmoniously together through our differences and my album is one which I hope to also bring all Malaysians together through the power of music!

How was the process for you?
Well just like any music album that is being produced in the market, the process is never plain sailing. We had our ups and downs but the end result is always worth the effort.

What is the most memorable thing about the process?
I would say the recording of the Mandarin song "Love Connection" in my album as the most challenging thing throughout as I am not from a chinese speaking background. As such, there were many adjustments and adapting to do on my part.

Jzelynn_Percaya.You didn’t compose any of the songs on the album. Would you be doing so for the next one?
I normally do participate and contribute in the composition process of my songs. So keep a lookout for my up and coming songs. You'll definitely sample J'zelynn's 'touch' in all the songs!

What are the plans now that you have an album to call your own?
I have already started the planning of my new song/s and/or album. So just be patient and we'll keep you posted!
