Did you miss The Click Five's concert at the Arena of Stars in Genting? It's alright, here's a little backstage action with the boys.
You have played in Malaysia before during your last tour, how did fans here react to your music?
Joey: This is our third trip to Malaysia and we have always found the fans to be amazing. We’ve never not had a crazy experience here. I’m pretty sure every show we’ve ever played, they’ve just let too many people in. We’ll see if that’s the case again this time but It’s always just crazy and everyone is very nice and very fun and we can’t wait to come back.
So what’s the plan for your full-length concert?
Kyle: Our concert in Malaysia is going to be a rock and roll show. It’s going to be really in your face; lots of high energy and a crazy drum solo by Joey Zaire.
(Interrupting) Joey: Erm...maybe...
How many names did you go through before settling on The Click Five?
Joey: (Laughs) Well, we went through a lot of names. We were actually ‘The Click’ for a long time and we just decided to extend it to ‘The Click Five’ because we didn’t want to get sued by all the other bands who were called ‘The Click’ — that’s the truth. Second album out, new lead singer, things are going well with the group - ever face a time when you guys went ‘Okay, looks like we’ve come to the end of our run?’
Kyle: Yeah, you know all bands go through highs and lows and we’ve definitely gone through lows even since I’ve been in the band and we’ve gone through a lot of highs too, so we just love it all. We like playing music, so as long as we can continue to do that, were happy.
You’re now on a world tour, what are the best and worst parts of touring?
Kyle: The good parts of touring are playing and all the travelling is really, really cool. I think one of the harder parts is being away from your friends, family, and loved ones. It’s like a double-edged sword. It’s what we do though so it’s hard for us to complain.
Who would you most love to collaborate with?
Joey: The band has a pretty intense appreciation of classic music so I think there’s a pretty long list of who we would like to collaborate with. I think currently someone who would probably be really high on that list — who’s still out doing his thing — would be Paul McCartney. There’s a lot of more recent bands that we’re into, too. We would love to tour with ‘Rooney’. Yeah, I think any band that’s into having a good time, and rock and roll — you know, it doesn’t even have to be rock and roll — whatever...music is music. I think we’d be open to it because were just doing this to have a good time and to do what we love.
Who are your biggest influences?
Kyle: Influences on the band span a lot of eras but it’s a lot of classic music: Tom Petty, The Beatles, and The Stones are some big influences on the band. There are also some new bands out there that we like but it really spans across a lot of things. We are just so inspired by things that move us internally and drive us to do something cool musically.
If you could choose a cover song to record, what would it be and what would you do to make it a Click Five version?
Joey: We’ve actually always really enjoyed doing covers. On both records we’ve recorded covers as B-sides. We play a lot of covers live and we tend to find covers by classic artists that may be known but a little obscure. I think the process of recording those covers for us is: we try to honour the song musically which in most cases, the original recording is probably the best that can be done but I think we just try to may be add a little bit of our energy to it. We just try to be natural and what comes out is our individual personalities.
You can check out a lot of different cool covers we’ve done: ‘Voices Carry’ by ‘Ammie Mann’, ‘I’ve Got You’ by the ‘Split Enz’ — I dont know if that ever came out though. We’re going to do a couple new covers for this trip and I think the criteria is just to jam good, strong, and catchy rock and roll songs by classic rock and roll artists.
Like most modern acts, you’ve used communities such as myspace and facebook to keep in touch with your fans. How important is the internet to you guys?
Kyle: So much of the music industry today is online. It’s very cool for us to have that avenue to stay in contact with our fans and for them to get a little bit more in depth information about us because all our profiles are run by us and no one else. We put up new pictures and write little notes on there and just let people know what were up to so it’s cool to have that.
Have you ever poked your fans on facebook?
Joey: We have never poked a fan on facebook.
Kyle: Never — it sounds awful. A And let me just say we never returned any pokes either. I don’t even know where to find poking so we haven’t done any poking.
