Always the revisionist, Welles extracts the best parts of Sir John Falstaff and molds them into a single and singular character study. In this very rare, 1965, hard-to-find film, Welles himself plays one of Shakespeare’s best loved figures with alternating gusto, cowardice, cunning and charm. Almost creating a separate and new piece of Shakespeare. Which, one assumes, was the intention.
