Produced by the same people that made MAFU (Malaysian Artistes For Unity), 15Malaysia consists of 15 short films directed by 15 young filmmakers in Malaysia. Most of the selected filmmakers have won international film awards from major festivals around the world and represent the core of what is known internationally as the Malaysian ‘New Wave’ filmmakers. The cast consists of numerous celebrities, actors, musicians – and most refreshingly – high profile and often controversial politicians.
The films in 15Malaysia deal not only with the issue of race relations but also various social and political issues faced by Malaysians today. These range from racism, the Mat Rempit phenomenon, freedom of expression, party-hopping, bribery, corruption, the state of Malaysian football, paedophilia, Islamic banking, or even humorous instructions on how to conduct halal cooking.
Taken together, the films represent a broad spectrum of filmmaking voices in Malaysia today.
You can watch all the fifteen short films online here, or here.
All films are scheduled for a staggered release at 15Malaysia.com. The last film, Rojak, will premiere on Sept 16 to coincide with Malaysia Day. For the synopsis and film list, click here.
