Upclose and personal with Yasmin Ahmad

Yasmin AhmadYasmin Ahmad gives Time Out KL a quick run-through of her career in the midst of the release of her latest film, ‘Talentime’, and the rescreening of ‘Muallaf’.

What spurred your interest in creating films?
Dad falling ill. It made me want to present him with a gift of love, made from some skill I had acquired.

Which would you prefer spending time on more, commercials or films?
I don't prefer one over the other. It all boils down to telling stories. Commercials are good because they help me pay the rent.

What inspires the storylines and plots in your films?
People. Only ever people.

You have been on the receiving end of narrow minded comments. Has that affected you in any way?
Not much. They made me turn to God, and that can't be a bad thing.

What are your thoughts on the local film industry?
I don't much think about film as an ‘industry’. Just a way to express my own feelings about life.

If there was one thing that you could change about it, what would it be?
That scriptwriters should read more.

What are your thoughts on your recent commercial for SPCA that was axed?
Anger at first. But we made some changes that will make them allow us to run it. I think the changes were for the better, in the end. God is great.

Do you find such obstacles discouraging and disappointing?
Only briefly. Then I move on.

On your latest film, ‘Talentime’, you featured two new talents taking up main roles. How did that worked out for you?
Brilliantly. We were blessed with great new actors.

Were there any hesitations in making that decision?
None whatsoever.

What brought to you the idea of ‘Talentime’?
The present state of the country, and some memories I had of such competitions in school.

How was the experience in creating your sixth film?
Good. There was so much love on set.

Was each of the films different in experience for you personally?
Only in so far as you get to meet and love new people.

I heard you were planning to do a film entitled ‘Mok-Mok’ but it’s been put on the back seat for now. Why’s that?
I lost interest.

Among all the films and commercials that you have produced, is there one that’s on top of your list?
My films are like my babies. I can't choose between them. Each is special in its own way.

Any advice for aspiring film makers?
Be real. Be honest. Work hard. Pray hard. And be nice to your parents.

‘Talentime’ is currently screening at major cinemas across the nation. Visit yasminthefilmmaker.blogspot.com for more updates and a peek into Yasmin Ahmad’s thoughts.
