Duck into BB Plaza to escape the madness of Sungei Wang and you’ll find Basheer waiting for you. It’s literally the room at the top of the stairs, right in front of you as you step off the escalator. Its shelves groan under the weight of endless hardbacks on architecture and all things design-related. Books that impress upon you the gravity of design and its attendant arts.
But it’s as fun as it is serious.There are small Japanese books just composed of pages of patterns, books of tearouts and cutouts to aid your scrapbooking, even books of stickers - it’s like a toy shop for grown up scribblers. We found Orla Kiely’s book ‘Pattern’ in all its kitsch loveliness amidst other works on colour combinations and drawing. The fashion section focuses in on technical fashion drawing, and the magazine racks are lined with international design rags. Emma Chong
