Superfood - Raisins

By Soraya Kee

They’re small, pellet-like and brown. Let’s face it, they’re not the prettiest of fruits. But raisins, which we all know are dried grapes, are real power-packed snacks. Remember those boxes of Ligo raisins your mum put in your school lunchbox? Well, we certainly hope you polished them off because according to nutritionist and member of the California Dietetics Association Tan Yen Sing, you’d have done yourself a real favour.

‘Raisins are a natural source of fructose, as well as high in anti-oxidants, potassium and dietary fibre,’ says Tan. ‘They’ve got absolutely zero sodium, cholesterol or fat.’ These tiny fruits aren’t just heart healthy, they’re also packed with inulin, which promotes growth of good bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract. Since they’re bursting with all this good stuff, it’s no surprise that raisins are even healthier than energy drinks. A serving of raisins is just 130 calories, so it makes a sweet snack that’s also much better for you than the sugar-saturated heart-attacks-waiting-to-happen that line shelves of supermarkets.

Going back to the Ligo in your lunchbox, though, it turns out mum really knew what she was doing. Child developmentalist and columnist for The Star, Ruth Liew, says that raisins ‘give children the good sugars they need for an energy boost.’ Lest you’re worried that she’s using ‘energy boost’ as a euphemism for sugar high, Liew goes on to add that the sugar in raisins ‘is just enough. It’s not too much.’

Even celebrity chef Emmanuel Stroobant, popularly known as the Chef in Black, is a fan of these nutritious fruits; ‘I keep healthy by eating raisins,’ he announced at a recent cooking demo, during which he prepared dishes using – you guessed it – raisins. Pairing them with unlikely bedfellows like salmon, beef and tomato, he served up fine dishes that displayed the versatility of these tiny fruits. Well, what more endorsement do you need? They’ve got Emmanuel Stroobant’s stamp of approval, start stocking up already
