Theatre houses in KL are buzzing with shows this week whether it’s comedy, dance or apocalyptic plays. Some catered to adults, others for families, we suggest you make some time this week to catch a play or two. With that, here are the best productions in KL:
Comedy
April Foolery and Fun (Apr 19 & 20)
The monthly Comedy Club KL show is a favourite among local comedy lovers and this month, we have our very own Douglas Lim performing while UK’s Jen Brister and Paul Myrehaug from Canada will join. If you were one of the thousands who didn't manage to score Russell Peters tickets, stand to win some at any of the Comedy Club shows.
Out of Order (Apr 19 & 20)
A farce by Ray Cooney, the award-winning UK comedy comes to KL as part of an exclusive dinner-and-show package. Richard Wiley, the suave and successful Junior Minister in the Lib-Con coalition Government, and his beautiful mistress Jane Worthington, the secretary to the Opposition leader, spend a naughty night together.
Late Night with AIIA (Apr 19)
The local improv comedy troupe performs every third Thursday of the month at Palate Palette to buckets of laughter. An adult-only crowd ensures adult-only jokes. You’ve been warned.
Theatre performance
Paper House (Apr 19-22)
The play tells the story of two brothers, Kim and Yen who inherit their father's Chinese paraphernalia shop upon his untimely death. After many adventures, the brothers realise they are lost in many ways and discover the answers in the paper house left behind by their late father.
It’s the End of the World, Now Run Screaming (Apr 18-22)
Apocalyptic plays seem to be trending of late and the latest kind is a compilation of six short plays, each stretching for 15 minutes. The cast includes Tiara Katrina, Elza Irdalynna and Benji Tan of ‘Relationship Status’ fame.
Goldilocks & The 3 Bears and The Gingerbread Man (Apr 17-22)
Targeted at children aged three to six, the play will allow youngsters to gain a firsthand experience with watching a full production on stage. Parents and teachers are encouraged to go along.
Dance
Usikan Rebab (Apr 18-22)
Mak Nab, a former mak yong performer, faces frustration and disappointment when her three daughters do not share her passion for the traditional dance theatre. The piece will be performed in Kelantanese and Malay with English subtitles.
Makyong Endeng Tejali (Apr 19-21)
Formerly banned in Kelantan, mak yong is slowly diminishing with no more than ten veteran dancers in the country. Do your bit by joining in the preservation of this tradition.
