(from left to right: Tutti-Frutti Daiquiri, Spiced Mango Daiquiri, Flirty Lychee Daiquiri)
Daiquiri is the mixologist’s answer to a tropical paradise. To many, Daiquiri, in its purest incarnation, provides the perfect way to enjoy rum. The citric sourness of the lime and the sharp sweetness of rum are balanced by the mellowing effects of the sugar, resulting in a refreshing combination. We pick out three spots in KL to down a few daiquiris.
Tutti-Frutti Daiquiri at Hilton KL (RM32)
Rum, triple sec, fresh lime juice, flavoured fruit puree
This blended cocktail might be too sweet for Hemingway’s delicate taste buds, but don’t be fooled by its colour; this fruity baby certainly packs a punch. Strawberry and mango are safe bets, but why not be adventurous and go down the mixed fruit route; the bartender might disapprove but Ernest would be proud.
Spiced Mango Daiquiri at twenty.one kitchen+bar (RM28)
Rum, lime, mango juice, spicy mango syrup, sugar syrup
The spicy mango syrup adds sizzle to the delicate balance between the sweetness of the mango and the rum’s bite, resulting in a flavour that is immense but not too overpowering. This variation of the cocktail is indeed sugar, spice and everything nice.
Flirty Lychee Daiquiri at 7atenine (RM26.70)
Havana Club, lychee liqueur, monin lychee syrup, lime fruit
The rock glass provides an elegant setting for this tropical reunion, with the liquid ingredients all blended with ice before a squeeze of lime juice is added into the mix. This is a tropical drink through and through.
