Eat now: The cronut arrives in KL

What happens when a doughnut and a croissant combine? The cronut – a hybrid pastry that has taken New York City, and now, the rest of the dessert-consuming world, by storm. Created by Dominique Ansel, owner of NYC’s Dominique Ansel Bakery, the cronut is essentially rings of puff pastry that are fried much like doughnuts are.

The very first cronut debuted on May 10 in rose-vanilla with Tahitian vanilla cream and rose sugar. As soon as word got around, lines would snake outside the bakery from 6am, two hours before the bakery opens its doors. Dominique Ansel is now showered with a shocking number of cronut requests; a two cronut per person quota has been implemented for walk-in customers.

With all great silly ideas, there are now copycat versions, so much so that the original cronut is spelt 'Cronut™'. Some are topped with frosting, fruits, chocolate or nuts, while others are filled with cream and fruit purees. Delectable by Su is the first outlet in KL to sell these flaky babies in flavours like caramel praline, lemon strawberry and coconut kaya. Be warned, the stuff will only sell till the end of July, so you have till then to stock up. The cronuts are priced at RM10 each.

Get the cronut at Delectable by Su, The Gardens Mall till July 30, RM10 each.
