Planning what to do on New Year's Eve can be a pain. There's always a rush of happenings on NYE and it's difficult to decide on the good ones. Whether you're in for a wild night out, some fine champagne, free live music or a relaxing night in, we tell you how best to ring in 2012.
Party
The ESCAPE:NYE party is a highlight this year featuring the likes of Marco V, Mat Zo, GBX (Goldfish, Blink & Xu) and Pete Tong. Other parties to look out for are Geisha at 7atenine, where LED geishas (whatever that means) and Harajuku fringe dancers will be present. Bedroom will be holding a sparkly NYE party (dress code: shiny) while you can party to 2011 radio anthems at Mist & MILK. If you're looking for alternative music, the New Deers Eve party by Deer Society is a good bet. Check out our full list of New Year parties for more.
Dine
If you want to avoid the thronging crowds, head into a restaurant and do what you do best, eat. There are heaps of New Year’s Eve dinner specials in KL but the sound of the six-course menu at il Lido and Frangipani (a menu of their classic dishes) are especially tantalising. Check out our full list of New Year feasts for more.
Flash mob
If you want to participate in something different this year, why not a flash mob? The OccupyDataran group are organising a flash mob reenactment of the final scene from ‘V For Vendetta’. Print yourself a mask from their Facebook page and you’re good to go. Pavilion KL’s street party will also feature a flash mob but instead of reenacting a dramatic vigilante scene, you dance to Lady Gaga’s music. There will also be street dancers, laser shows, street buskers and lots of confetti.
Public parties
Most malls in KL are a good bet should you want to witness a fireworks display. Publika’s NY Countdown Party stands out as it will feature illusionists, magicians and fire eaters besides the mandatory fireworks. KLCC will host percussionists and ethnic music performances which will be synchronised to the Lake Symphony Fountains. The fireworks overlooking the Petronas Twin Towers will surely make for a good postcard picture. i-City will usher the New Year in with ‘SnoWalk’, a canopy walkway with sub-zero temperatures and performances by local talents.
Live music
Mystical Eve will be the concert of the night featuring performances by Mizz Nina, Pop Shuvit, Reza Salleh and international aerialists. Food and other entertainment will be on site. Meanwhile, Konsert Ambang 2012 at Dataran Merdeka will be cast live on RTM2 and will feature performances by Mizz Nina (yes, again), Awie, Hujan and more. If you’d like something more subdued, catch the Jose Thomas Project and Elvira Arul at No Black Tie.
Movies
If you’re planning to have a quiet one at home, STAR Movies (Ch 413) will be screening a series of hit films from 3pm such as Closer, 500 Days of Summer, Tangled and Prince of Persia and Tron. Otherwise, catch The King’s Speech and Iron Man 2 on HBO (Ch 411). For a truly explosive New Year, catch Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol at TGV Sunway Pyramid IMAX theatre at 11.30pm.
