You may have come across the neon ‘The BIG B.I.G Weekend’ posters if you’ve been driving around the Mont Kiara area this past week. The posters promise food samplings, a bubbly brunch, sausage sizzlers, movies and the biggest nasi lemak in the world. If it’s all a bit overwhelming, we understand. We dropped in at Publika to see what exactly you can expect this weekend.
Within Ben’s Independent Grocer, participate in cooking demonstrations including a curry puff making session, a ‘how to put together a perfect salad’ demo, a Chinese herbal soup cooking demo and an introduction to fresh fish. Now to the part we all like – free food.
Free samples of food will be displayed at every station so you can pick your way around the grocer while you watch the demonstrations and activities before you. Some of the food you’ll get to sample are truffle scrambled eggs, assorted cheeses and condiments, roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, bread with Eshire butter (only the best butter in France and quite possibly, everywhere else), open sandwiches, peanut butter and banana toasties, passionfruit marshmallows, chocolate truffles, coffee and assorted baby pizzas.

May 26 (9am-12noon)
The BIG Nasi Lemak
The team at Ben’s Independent Grocer will attempt at putting together the biggest nasi lemak in the world. If you’d rather eat than make the stuff, steaming plates of nasi lemak will be served. For RM5, you get a serve of nasi lemak and a glass of teh tarik while an extra RM10 gets you Wagyu brisket rendang on the side.
May 26 (8pm-11pm)
The BIG Bang
We love our carnival food and this party will offer the best of the lot – bratwursts and new potato, Belgian fries with Andalouse sauce, root beer floats, popcorn, candy floss, baby jam doughnuts, salt beef and sauerkraut sandwiches, roast chicken with gravy and of course, beer. Music performances by Shareen Ramli and Asmidar will ensure a lively atmosphere throughout the night.
May 27 (11am-2pm)
The BIG Bubbly Brunch
Bubbly brunches are often luxurious affairs and this one’s no different. Tuck into French toasts, oysters, gourmet breads and of course, champagne (Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin). Jazz music will play in the back for a touch of added romance. The brunch is priced at RM100 or RM150 with a free flow of champagne. Advanced reservations at 03 6209 1717 are a must.
May 27 (1pm-8pm)
The BIG BBQ
The weekend closes with a carnival – as all weekends should. Perfect for the kids, the day will feature clowns on stilts, balloon animals, face painting, a bouncy castle, a mechanical bull and a country music band. Spit-roasted lamb, striploin steak, assorted beef and chicken sausages, corn on the cob, chicken wings, churros and potato salads will go around while cold drinks and beer are available. After all the food, try your hand (or rather, feet) at a hoedown.
