The French Art and Film Festival is back this year and some of the French-themed activities include theatre performances, film screenings, a circus act and a market. The best time to learn up on French culture, the festival goes on for a month and will have something for anyone of any age. To help you choose which events to attend, here’s a list of happenings from May 23-June 23.
Film
French film screenings
Seven French films will be screened at GSC International Screens (Pavilion, 1 Utama and Mid Valley) from May 24-June 3. Some of these include the Oscar-nominated ‘A Cat in Paris’, ‘Father of my Children’ and ‘Romantics Anonymous’. The star of them is all of course, ‘the Artist’, the coveted film which captivated most of the world and swept up most of the awards this year. ‘The Artist’ will only show on May 25 at 9pm so make sure to book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. Music
Cécile Corbel (June 8)
The Breton musician will present a Celtic harp performance influenced by fairy moods and ancient melodies. It’s probably not often you tell your friends ‘I went to a Celtic harp performance last night’.
Fête de La Musique (June 23)
As a fitting finale to the month-long festival, the concert will feature French band, Miliana as they share the stage with local musicians Bunkface and Johnny Comes Lately. Fête de La Musique is a popular music day celebrated worldwide.
French Dreams (May 26 & 27)
If classical music is more your thing, the MPO will collaborate with world-renowned French conductor Stéphane Denève and leading pianist Eric Le Sage.
Theatre
Le Petit Zinc de KL
A play by The French Theatre Company in which a French couple and two expatriates indulge themselves in a hilarious discussion.
‘Perchés Cie Chabatz D’entrar
The French contemporary circus troupe will present a playful tale of a man and a woman through the theatrics of stilts and acrobats.
Books
Georges Voisset: Tales From The Deep Forest
The mousedeer (kancil) plays central role in this collection of traditional stories, directly adapted by original Malay stories. There will be a reading and autograph session by the author.
Shopping
Le Marché De France
The French market aims to promote French regions and territories by selling culinary specialties and lifestyle products. Let’s hope to see a range of cheeses and wines on sale. There will also be an acoustic stage featuring local bands Ferns, Arabella and De Wangga Sakti.
