A commissioned work to commemorate Malaysia’s 51st anniversary, Jiawei Shen’s mural explores the possibilities that art offers in renewing the way we look at history. The mural features historical and contemporary protagonists that helped shape modern Malaysia.
More importantly, it illuminates the enduring relationship between history and the vocation of art. At the same time, it presents a contrasting narrative of the acknowledgement and affirmation of historical roles in the making of Malaysia. As such it is one of the more thought-provoking and mentally stimulating commemorations of our nation’s independence.
