Rumah Air Panas (RAP) in partnership with Stella Maris Secondary School and Galeri Petronas, and supported by the Matahati Art Fund and The Annexe's Grants For Grabs, have recently launched the Contemporary Art in School (CAIS) Project with hopes of churning out the next generation of artists in Malaysia and to heighten awareness and appreciation for contemporary art. What sets it apart from just another youth-oriented project is the direct involvement of professionals — artists and curators — and the environment it creates for students, with the main goal is to supplement and enhance art education in the country.
The line-up of people involved reads like a roll call of top contemporary artists today: Ahmad Fuad Osman, Amanda Heng from Singapore, Au Sow Yee, Chang Yoong Chia and Teoh Ming Wah, Chuah Chong Yong, Dean Linguey (Australia), Erica Eaton (USA), Fahmi Fadzil and Azmyl Yunor, Kok Siew Wai, Lim Kok Yong aka Wing, Low Yi Chin, Ooi Kooi Hin, Shia Yih Ying, Tengku Sabri and Mastura Abdul Rahman, Vincent Leong, and Wong Hoy Cheong.
Guided by these senior artists, the students will collectively present their final products alongside the more senior artists’ over the Merdeka weekend (August 30 – September 1) and on Saturday, September 6. Members of the public are welcome and entrance is free.
